Rekeying locks in Fairfax, VA

What is rekeying?
A pin tumbler lock contains small stacks of pins of different lengths. The right key lifts each stack so the gap between the pins lines up with the edge of the plug, called the shear line, and the lock turns. Rekeying means taking the cylinder apart and swapping those pins for a new set that matches a new key. The old key no longer lines up, so it no longer works.

How we rekey a lock
Remove the cylinder
We take the cylinder out of the lock body, usually without removing the whole lock from the door.
Change the pins
The old key pins come out and new ones are fitted to match a freshly cut key.
Test with you
Every rekeyed lock is tested with the new keys before we leave, and the old keys are checked to confirm they no longer turn.
Rekey or replace?
Rekeying is the better value when your locks are in good condition. If they are worn, damaged, low-grade or you want extra protection, look at lock replacement or high-security locks instead.
Rekeying FAQs
Is rekeying cheaper than new locks?
Usually, because you keep your existing hardware and pay for the pins, labour and keys rather than new lock bodies.
Can different brands be keyed alike?
Only if they share a compatible keyway. If not, we can fit matching cylinders so one key opens them all.
Can smart locks be rekeyed?
Many smart deadbolts have a standard key cylinder as a backup, and that cylinder can usually be rekeyed.
